History and symbolism
A white cross quarters blue and red fields, with arms at the center bearing a Bible, a cross and the motto Dios, Patria, Libertad. Designed by Juan Pablo Duarte, the flag was first hoisted on 28 February 1844 during the war of independence from Haiti.
